★★★★★
SwimmingKayakingFamilies

Consistently ranked one of the best beaches in the United States, and it earns it. Two miles of powder-soft white sand, crystal-clear turquoise water, and reliably calm conditions. The town of Kailua is just steps away with excellent cafes and restaurants. Far fewer crowds than Waikiki.

Parking

Free street parking on Kawailoa Rd. Fills fast on weekends.

Local Tip

Arrive before 9 AM on weekends. Rent a kayak and paddle to the twin Mokulua Islands for one of the best half-days on the island.

Lanikai Beach

Windward · Year-round

SwimmingSunrisesPhotos

Often called the most beautiful beach in Hawaii: a narrow strip of white sand bordered by calm, impossibly blue water and backed by private homes. Faces the twin Mokulua Islands, making for extraordinary sunrise photography. Small and intimate, it feels worlds away from Waikiki.

Parking

Very limited street parking on Mokulua Drive. Walk from Kailua Beach for easier access.

Local Tip

Visit at sunrise. The light is spectacular and you'll likely have the beach nearly to yourself.

Hanauma Bay

East Oahu · Year-round (closed Monday–Tuesday)

★★★★★
SnorkelingFamiliesMarine Life

A protected volcanic crater turned marine nature preserve and one of the finest snorkeling destinations in the world. Over 400 species of tropical fish live in the bay. The water is warm, clear, and calm, making it excellent for beginners and families. An environmental education program is required on first entry.

Parking

Limited lot ($3). Sell out early. Uber/Lyft is a reliable alternative.

Local Tip

Reservations ($25/person) are required and sell out 2–3 days ahead. Book online immediately after finalizing your dates.

Waikiki Beach

South Shore · Year-round

★★★★☆
Surfing lessonsSunsetsNightlife access

The most famous beach in Hawaii: two miles of golden sand fronting Honolulu's most iconic hotels. The water is warm, calm, and ideal for beginner surfing. More crowded and developed than anywhere else on the island, but the energy is unmatched and the sunsets over Diamond Head are genuinely spectacular.

Parking

Street parking extremely limited. Use hotel garages ($15–$30) or walk from Ala Moana.

Local Tip

Stay for sunset. The sky behind Diamond Head turns vivid orange and pink. The Sheraton's beach bar is a great spot to watch.

Sandy Beach

East Oahu · Year-round (observe only in rough conditions)

★★★★☆
BodyboardingWatching the wavesLocals

The most powerful shorebreak in Hawaii: steep, crashing waves that bodyboarders and bodysurfers prize. Not safe for casual swimming, but spectacular to watch. Wide, flat, and beautiful, with a local crowd that knows how to read the water.

Parking

Large free lot. Rarely fills.

Local Tip

Do not swim here unless you're an experienced ocean swimmer. The shorebreak has injured many tourists. Watch from the shore; it's an incredible spectacle.

Sunset Beach

North Shore · Swimming: May–September. Spectating: November–February

★★★★★
Surfing spectacleWinter swellsNorth Shore vibe

Home to one of the world's most famous surf breaks: a long, powerful wave that breaks over a shallow reef, producing massive barrels in winter. In summer, the water calms dramatically and becomes a gorgeous, swimmable beach. Either way, the wide white sand and dramatic ocean views make it one of Oahu's most beautiful beaches.

Parking

Limited roadside parking on Kamehameha Highway.

Local Tip

In winter, watch from the beach for safety but stay out of the water. In summer, it's one of the best swimming beaches on the island.

Waimea Bay

North Shore · Swimming: May–September. Big waves: December–February

★★★★★
Cliff jumpingSummer swimmingWinter spectating

Famous worldwide for its enormous winter waves. The Eddie Aikau Invitational competition only runs here when waves exceed 30 feet. In summer, the bay transforms into a calm, brilliant turquoise swimming hole with a popular cliff jump. One of the most beautiful bays in Hawaii in any season.

Parking

Free lot (small) and roadside on Kamehameha Highway. Fills quickly on weekends.

Local Tip

The cliff jump is about 25 feet and popular with locals. Only attempt it when the water is calm and deep (summer only). Watch for surf lifeguards' advice.

Shark's Cove

North Shore · Summer only (May–September)

★★★★☆
SnorkelingTide poolsMarine life

A natural lava rock cove that creates a protected shallow bay teeming with tropical fish, sea turtles, and colorful coral. One of the best shore snorkel spots on Oahu in summer: completely free, less crowded than Hanauma Bay, and often more diverse marine life in the rocky areas.

Parking

Large free lot across the highway (Pupukea Beach Park).

Local Tip

Only visit in summer (May–September). In winter the surf fills the cove and makes it extremely dangerous.

Ko Olina Lagoons

West Oahu · Year-round

★★★☆☆
FamiliesCalm swimmingResort guests

Four man-made lagoons on the leeward coast: sheltered, calm, and consistently flat. Great for young children who need predictable water. The water clarity is excellent and the sand is pristine. Less character than natural beaches but reliably safe and beautiful.

Parking

Limited free public parking (arrive very early on weekends). Resort guests have priority.

Local Tip

These are technically public beaches despite being surrounded by resort property. Arrive before 9 AM to guarantee parking.

Makapuu Beach

East Oahu · Year-round (check surf conditions before swimming)

★★★★☆
BodyboardingDramatic sceneryAdjacent lighthouse trail

A wide, dramatic beach at the eastern tip of the island beneath towering sea cliffs. Known for its powerful shorebreak, popular with bodyboarders and boogie boarders. The nearby Makapuu Lighthouse Trail (a 2-mile round-trip coastal hike) has spectacular views of the Mokulua Islands and offshore whale sightings in winter.

Parking

Free lot (can fill on weekends).

Local Tip

Pair with the Makapuu Lighthouse Trail. The views from the top are among the best coastal vistas on Oahu.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most beautiful beach in Oahu?

Lanikai Beach and Kailua Beach are consistently rated the most beautiful beaches in Oahu and frequently appear on lists of the best beaches in the world. Both offer powder-soft white sand, crystal-clear turquoise water, and views of the Mokulua Islands. Lanikai is more intimate and photogenic; Kailua is larger and more accessible.

Which Oahu beaches are best for families with kids?

Kailua Beach, Ko Olina Lagoons, and Waikiki Beach are the best for families. Kailua has calm, shallow water with lifeguards. Ko Olina's man-made lagoons are the calmest on the island, ideal for young children. Hanauma Bay is excellent for older kids who can snorkel. Avoid Sandy Beach and strong-surf spots with children.

Is Waikiki Beach worth visiting?

Yes. Waikiki Beach is worth at least one visit, especially for the experience and the sunset. It's more crowded and developed than other Oahu beaches, but the iconic setting (Diamond Head backdrop, warm turquoise water, world-famous hotels) makes it uniquely memorable. For pure beach quality, Kailua and Lanikai are superior.

What is the clearest water beach in Oahu?

Hanauma Bay consistently has the clearest water in Oahu, protected from currents and pollution as a marine sanctuary. Lanikai Beach and Kailua Beach are close behind with brilliant turquoise clarity. The North Shore beaches have clear water in summer (May–September) when the surf calms down.

Are all beaches in Oahu free?

Almost all beaches in Oahu are free to visit. The only major exception is Hanauma Bay ($25/person entry fee plus a required online reservation). Parking fees apply at some popular spots (Diamond Head area, Hanauma Bay), but the beaches themselves are public and free. Some resort beach areas have limited free public parking that fills quickly.
